September 13th, 2022.6 p.m.On a warm evening in Thran, a 22-year-old woman stepped out of her brother’s car near a metro station.

Her name was Masa Amini.

Her headscarf had slipped just slightly, a few strands of hair showing.

Within minutes, she was dragged into a police van.

and 3 days later she was dead and her death would set an entire country on fire.

This is the story of what happened to Masa Amin.

Through her story, you’ll meet the man who sat at the very top of the system of His name was Ayatollah Ali Kam.

Was he a dictator? You decide.

To understand what happened to Masa, you first need to understand how Iran works.

Since 1979, Iran has been an Islamic republic.

And at the very top of that republic sits Ali Kamune, the supreme leader.

He controls the military, the courts, the intelligence services, state television, foreign policy, everything for 36 years.

He wasn’t always powerful.

When he took over in 1989 after the death of Ayatollah Kmeni, the founder of the Islamic Republic, Kam was a mid-ranking cleric.

He didn’t have the religious credentials.

He didn’t have the charisma.

Many people thought he wouldn’t last, but he did.

Quietly, patiently, he built a web of loyalists inside the military, the revolutionary guard, the judiciary, and the media.

By the 2000s, no major decision in Iran happened without his approval.

And one of those decisions was that every woman in Iran must cover her hair in public.

No exceptions.

To enforce that rule, the government created a special unit called the Gashed Ershod, the guidance patrol, better known as the morality police.

Their job was simple.

Drive around the city, find women who weren’t dressed properly, arrest them.

Now, here’s the question.

What happens when that system meets a girl named Masa? Sakez, Kurdistan province, Iran.

Masa Amini was born in 1999 in Sakez, a small city in Iran’s Kurdish Northwest.

Her real name was Gina.

In Kurdish, it means life.

But Iran doesn’t allow non-Persian names on official documents.

So her family registered her as Masa.

She was a normal young woman.

No criminal record, no political activism.

She was visiting Thrron with her brother Karash to see relatives.

Hakani Highway Metro Station.

That evening, near the Hakani Metro Station, a morality police van pulled over.

Officers stopped Masa.

They said her headscarf was too loose, her pants were too tight.

She was taken.

Karash tried to stop them.

He argued.

They pepper-sprayed him.

An officer told him to calm down.

His sister would be released after a short re-education class at the detention center.

So Karash waited outside the Vozara detention center.

He waited for 2 hours.

Then he saw an ambulance leave the building.

He asked a guard what happened.

The guard said, “One of our soldiers got hurt.

That was a lie.

” The person in the ambulance was Masa.

She was already in a coma inside the detention center.

What happened between the arrest and the ambulance? That question would soon divide an entire nation.

According to a woman who was detained at the same station, Masa was complaining about pain in her head the moment she arrived.

When the eyewitness asked her why, Masa said that officers had struck her on the head while forcing her out of the police van.

Other detainees confirmed the same thing.

Masa had hesitated to step out.

A senior officer hit her.

Inside the detention room, Masa asked a female officer why she was there.

She was brushed off.

Minutes later, she collapsed.

A medical staffer came, then another.

Neither knew what to do.

Nearly 2 hours passed before a proper doctor arrived.

By the time the ambulance reached Kazra Hospital in northern Thran, Masa showed no vital signs.

Her brain had stopped functioning.

Doctors managed to restart her heartbeat, but she never woke up.

3 days later, September 16th, 2022, Masa Amini was pronounced dead.

She was 22 years old.

But here’s where it gets complicated.

Within hours, the Iranian government launched a very different version of events.

Police released edited CCTV footage from the detention center.

It showed a woman who they identified as Maka talking to a female officer, then suddenly collapsing.

No beating, no violence, just a girl who fainted.

They brought a neurosurgeon on state television who claimed Matzah had a brain tumor removed when she was 8, implying she was already sick.

The government’s coroner ruled her death was caused by multiple organ failure due to cerebral hypoxia.

Translation: Her brain didn’t get enough oxygen.

No mention of any beating.

Case closed.

Not even close.

Masa’s father went on the BBC and said five words that changed everything.

They are lying about everything.

Hospital photos showed Masa in bed with blood seeping from her ear and bruises under her eyes.

Independent doctors pointed out that bleeding from the ear does not happen with a heart attack.

It happens with skull fractures.

Leaked CT scans appeared to confirm bone fracture, hemorrhaging, and brain swelling.

Masa’s father called the CCTV footage an edited version.

Her family said she was completely healthy.

No heart condition, no complications from any childhood surgery.

So, who was telling the truth? Sakez, Kurdistan Province.

September 17th, 2022.

The day after Masa died, hundreds of people showed up to her funeral in Sakez, defying direct warnings from the authorities.

Women ripped off their headscarves.

Some cut their hair in public.

The crowd chanted death to the dictator.

They were talking about Kam.

Within days, protests erupted in 80 cities.

Then 100.

Then every single one of Iran’s 31 provinces.

High school girls 15 and 16 years old stood on desks in classrooms chanting against the regime.

The slogan Xan zindi aadi woman life freedom spread across the world.

This wasn’t just about a headscarf anymore.

This was a generation saying enough.

Enough of being told how to dress, what to think, how to live.

Enough of a system where one unelected man makes all the rules.

But how would that man respond? October 3rd, 2022.

For weeks, Kam said nothing.

Then he broke his silence.

He appeared on television and called the protests riots.

He blamed the United States and Israel.

He said foreign enemies had exploited Masa Amini’s death to destabilize Iran.

According to him, this was not a popular uprising.

It was a foreign plot.

And then the full force of the state came down.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Basage militia, riot police, all deployed.

According to the United Nations factf finding mission, security forces used live ammunition against demonstrators, including AK-47s and submachine guns, against civilians, against women, against children.

The internet was shut down almost entirely.

Social media, messaging apps, news platforms gone.

Iran became a digital black hole.

The outside world could barely see what was happening inside.

Journalists who tried to report the truth were arrested.

Nilufar Hamemedi, the reporter who first broke the story of Masa’s hospitalization, was thrown into solitary confinement at Evan Prison, one of the most notorious detention facilities in the Middle East.

And something even more chilling was happening behind the scenes.

Iranian authorities began using CCTV cameras and artificial intelligence to identify protesters after the fact, tracking them down one by one.

But even with all of that, the protests kept going, so the regime escalated further.

Zahedan, Sistan, Baluchestan province, September 30th, 2022.

Zahedan is a city in southeastern Iran, home to the Bailo ethnic minority, mostly Sunni Muslims in a Shia ruled country.

They had been marginalized for decades.

On September 30th, thousands gathered after Friday prayer.

They marched through the streets.

Security forces opened fire.

The United Nations reported that 104 people were killed in Zahedan that single day.

Most of them were men and boys.

Some were just bystanders.

It became known as Bloody Friday.

By the end of 2022, the numbers were staggering.

At least 500 people were killed across the country.

20,000 arrested.

Over half of those killed came from ethnic minority regions, Kurdish and Bayo areas that were already among the poorest in Iran.

And the government, they called every single protester a rioter, a terrorist, a foreign agent.

But not everyone inside the system agreed.

In November 2022, Farid Moratkani Kam’s own niece was arrested in Thran.

Her crime, she had publicly called on foreign governments to cut ties with Iran over the crackdown.

When your own family turns against you, what does that say? December 8th, 2022.

The streets eventually quieted down.

Not because people accepted what happened, because the cost of resistance became too high.

And then the executions began.

Revolutionary courts operating under KA’s judiciary charged protesters with Mohare, which translates to enmity against God, a capital offense.

Trials lasted minutes.

Defendants had no real legal representation.

State television broadcast what it called confessions, but human rights organizations said those confessions were coerced, filmed under duress, and scripted.

On December 8th, 23-year-old Mosen Shakari became the first protester to be hanged.

He was accused of blocking a road and injuring a police officer.

The director of Iran Human Rights called his trial a show trial without any due process.

Two more followed.

Muhammad Medi Karami and Muhammad Husini.

In total, at least seven people were executed for participating in the protests.

12 more sat on death row.

Iran’s execution rate nearly doubled in the 2 years following Masa’s death from 815 to over 1,400.

The message from the top was clear.

Speak up and you die.

So was Kamai a dictator? It depends on who you ask.

The United Nations factf finding mission concluded that Masa Amini’s death was unlawful and caused by physical violence for which the Iranian state bears responsibility.

They documented the use of lethal force against peaceful protesters, arbitrary detentions, torture, enforced disappearances, and the killing of hundreds.

actions that international legal experts said could constitute crimes against humanity.

As supreme leader, Comedy held ultimate authority over every institution involved, the military, the judiciary, the revolutionary guard, the intelligence services.

Nothing happened at that scale without his knowledge, and many things happened by his direct order.

His critics both inside Iran and around the world saw a man who crushed every challenge to his power.

The green movement in 2009, the fuel protests in 2019, and now the woman life freedom movement.

Each time the playbook was the same blame foreign enemies, shut down the internet, send in the guns.

But his supporters saw someone else entirely.

To them, KA was a guardian, a man who held Iran together against decades of Western sanctions, military threats, and attempts at regime change.

He pushed for self-reliance in science and technology.

He challenged American foreign policy in the Middle East when few others dared.

Both versions existed at the same time.

Both had evidence to support them.

Thrron, Iran, February 28th, 2026.

Kamina was killed in a joint USIsraeli air strike.

He was 86 years old.

When the news broke, something remarkable happened.

In cities across Iran, Thran, Isvahan, Shiraz, people poured into the streets, not to mourn, to celebrate.

Fireworks lit up the sky.

Young people danced.

In one town, a crowd pulled down a statue of Kmeni, the founder of the Islamic Republic.

But at the same time in mosques and universities supporters of the regime gathered in prayer.

They called KA a hero, a martyr.

The grandson of Kmeni himself called him a hero of the Iranian people.

Same man.

Two completely opposite reactions.

And somewhere in all of that noise, there was a name that still echoed.

Gina, the Kurdish word for life.

The name Iran’s government wouldn’t let a family use.

The name that became a battlecry.

Gina, you will not die.

Your name will become a symbol.

A 22-year-old woman stepped out of a car.

Her headscarf slipped and everything that followed, the arrests, the bullets, the executions, the protests, the fireworks on the night Kamina died.

All of it traced back to that single moment.

More than 500 people were killed, 20,000 arrested, at least seven hanged.

All because they asked one question.

Who gave you the right to decide how we live? Kamina is gone now.

But that question isn’t.

Was he a dictator? That answer is yours.
