leader of Solar Scriptura Baptist Church, author of books attacking Catholicism, proud Protestant who thought she was defending biblical truth.
I’m leaving as just Sarah, a broken woman who encountered a saint who showed her that for 23 years she’s been fighting against her own family.
I don’t know what comes next.
I don’t know how to undo 23 years of anti-atholic ministry.
But I know this.
I need to convert.
I need to come home to the Catholic Church.
Carlos showed me that Jesus established one church, gave it to Peter, and my Protestant ancestors left that church 500 years ago, thinking they were reforming it.
But you can’t reform something by leaving it.
You can’t fix your family by abandoning your family.
She approached me slowly.
Mrs.
Salzano, I know I have no right to ask this, but would you help me? Would you guide me in this process? I need to learn what I should have learned as a child.
I need to understand the faith I’ve spent two decades attacking.
I embraced her without hesitation.
What else could I do? This was a soul Carlo had reached from heaven.
This was a sister in Christ who had been lost and was now being found.
Of course, I whispered.
Of course, I’ll help you.
Carlo would want nothing less.
The following two hours were surreal.
Sarah sat with me in a quiet corner of the sanctuary, asking questions with the humility of a child.
Where had she gone wrong in her theology? How do Catholics understand the papacy? What does the church actually teach about Mary, saints, the eukarist? Every question was prefaced with an apology for how she had previously presented these topics.
Her crew approached us tentatively.
Sarah, one of them said, we need to talk about what happens next.
Your church, your followers, your books.
People are expecting your expose videos.
What are we going to tell them? Sarah looked at them with compassion.
Tell them the truth.
Tell them that I came to expose a fraud and discovered instead that I was the one living in error.
Tell them that a 15-year-old boy who loved Jesus more purely than I ever have reached across death to save me.
Tell them that Pastor Sarah Thompson is becoming Catholic.
And if they love me, they’ll try to understand why.
One of the crew members, a man in his 30s, spoke carefully.
Sarah, I’ve worked with you for 8 years.
I’ve seen you debate theologians, face down priests, stand firm against Catholic arguments.
I’ve never seen you uncertain.
What happened when you touched that tomb? What did you really see? Sarah considered the question seriously.
Tom, I saw Carlo Acutis as clearly as I see you now.
He was wearing jeans and a hoodie exactly as I’d seen in photos.
He was smiling with this joy that seemed to come from being in God’s presence.
And he spoke to me, not with audible words, but directly into my heart.
He showed me Jesus on the cross and I understood for the first time what I’d been doing.
Every time I convinced a Catholic to leave the church, I was pulling a stone from the building Jesus established.
Every time I taught that the Eucharist was just a symbol, I was denying Jesus’s clear words.
This is my body.
Every time I mocked prayers to saints, I was rejecting the communion of believers that transcends death.
She paused, fresh tears forming.
But here’s what broke me completely.
Carlo showed me that he had been praying for me for months.
He knew I was planning this trip.
He knew I was coming to mock him.
And his response was to intercede for my conversion.
He asked Jesus to give me one chance to see truth.
That’s what his prayer was.
Jesus, give Sarah one chance to see with your eyes instead of her own.
And Jesus answered his prayer.
That’s what happened when I touched the tomb.
Jesus let me see through his eyes and from that perspective, everything I believed was revealed as pride masquerading as theology.
Tom and the other crew members stood silent, processing.
Finally, Tom said quietly, “Sarah, I think I think I need to reconsider some things, too.
If what you’re saying is true, research it,” Sarah urged.
Don’t take my experience as proof of anything, but research church history honestly.
Read the church fathers.
Look at what the earliest Christians believed about the Eucharist, about bishops, about authority.
Ask yourself why for 1,500 years there was just one church, and whether the Protestant Reformation was reform or fracture.
Ask yourself where the Bible came from, if not from the church that compiled it.
Just ask honest questions and be willing to follow truth wherever it leads.
Over the next week, Sara remained in Aisi.
She attended daily mass at the sanctuary, often spending hours before Carlo’s tomb in prayer.
She read constantly Catholic catechism, papal encyclicals, writings of the saints.
She met with priests, asking endless questions, unpacking 23 years of Protestant theology and rebuilding a foundation of Catholic faith.
She also began the painful process of addressing her anti-atholic ministry.
She posted a video that went viral, recorded right there at Carlo’s tomb, explaining what had happened.
“I came to expose what I thought was deception,” she said to the camera, her face still showing traces of tears.
Instead, I encountered truth so powerful it shattered everything I thought I knew.
To every Catholic I harmed with my words, to every person I led away from the church, to every soul I confused with my certainty.
I am profoundly sorry.
I was wrong.
Not wrong in details, wrong in everything.
I’m beginning the process of converting to Catholicism because a 15-year-old saint loved me enough to show me the truth.
The response was explosive.
Her Protestant followers were shocked, angry, confused.
Thousands unfollowed her immediately.
She received messages calling her a traitor, a deceiver, a false teacher.
Other Protestant leaders denounced her publicly, claiming she had either suffered a mental breakdown or been deceived by Satan.
But other responses were different.
Catholics around the world rejoiced at her conversion, seeing it as a powerful testimony to Carlo’s intercession.
And quietly, privately, Sarah began receiving messages from Protestants who admitted they had similar doubts, who wondered if perhaps they had been wrong about Catholicism, who asked if she would help them explore the Catholic faith.
6 months later on April 3rd, 2025, Sarah Thompson was received into the Catholic Church in a special ceremony held at the sanctuary of Arammo Delicari directly before Carlo’s tomb.
The ceremony was attended by hundreds, including many of her former Protestant followers who had been moved by her journey.
I was there, of course.
I stood as her sponsor.
this woman who had intended to destroy my son’s reputation and had instead become my sister in faith.
During the ceremony, as Sarah professed the Nyine Creed and received her first holy communion, I felt Carlo’s presence so strongly.
It was as if he was standing beside me, smiling, that bright smile that had lit up our home for 15 years.
After receiving the Eucharist for the first time, Sarah returned to Carlo’s tomb and knelt there, praying with the kind of devotion she had once mocked.
When she stood, she turned to address the congregation.
“Brothers and sisters,” she said, her voice strong despite the emotion.
“I stand before you as a woman who has been given the greatest gift, the gift of being proven wrong.
For 23 years, I built a ministry on dividing Christ’s church.
I convinced myself I was defending biblical truth while actually perpetuating the fracturing of Christ’s body.
Carlo Acutis, a teenager who loved Jesus with pure devotion, who documented Eucharistic miracles with scientific precision, who believed that faith and reason work together.
This saint reached from heaven to save me from my pride.
She looked at Carlo’s tomb with profound tenderness.
Carlo taught me that saints are not idols we worship but family members who pray for us.
He taught me that the Catholic Church is not the enemy of Christianity but its fullest expression.
He taught me that Jesus really meant it when he said, “This is my body and you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church.
” Most importantly, Carlo taught me that Christian unity doesn’t come from agreeing to disagree, but from returning to the church Jesus founded and allowing him to make us truly one.
She paused, scanning the faces in the congregation.
I know some of you here are Protestant, maybe curious about why I converted.
Some of you are ex- Catholics, perhaps wondering if you made a mistake leaving the church.
To all of you, I say, ask Carlo to pray for you.
Ask this teenage saint who loved technology and sneakers, who played video games and made websites, who was completely modern while being completely devoted to ancient truth.
Ask him to show you what he showed me.
Ask him to let you see the church through Jesus’s eyes instead of through centuries of division and misunderstanding.
Today, 18 months after that October morning, Sarah leads what she calls the Carlo Acutis Reconciliation Ministry.
It’s an organization dedicated to helping Protestants explore Catholicism honestly without the hostility and misrepresentation that characterized her previous work.
She has helped facilitate over 800 conversions of Protestants who, like her, discovered that the Catholic Church is not the enemy they were taught it was.
She maintains a blog where she addresses common Protestant objections to Catholicism, but now from a position of having lived both sides.
She speaks at conferences, sharing her testimony and fielding questions from skeptical Protestants.
She has written a new book titled The Saint Who Saved Me: How Carlo Acutis Led Me Home to Rome, which has become a bestseller in both Catholic and Protestant circles.
Most remarkably, many of her former followers have joined her on this journey.
Her old church in Dallas after her departure, split between those who saw her conversion as betrayal and those who wondered if she might be right.
A group of about 200 members began meeting to study Catholic teaching.
And over the past year, 87 of them have entered the church.
Sarah still videos everything, but now she documents conversions instead of attacks.
Last month, she filmed a former Baptist minister’s first confession.
Two weeks ago, she captured the moment when a lifelong Presbyterian received the Eucharist for the first time.
She creates content showing Protestants discovering the richness of Catholic liturgy, the depth of Catholic theology, the beauty of Catholic tradition.
“Carlo taught me to document truth,” she told me recently.
“He spent his short life cataloging Eucharistic miracles because he wanted people to see evidence of Jesus’s real presence.
I’m doing the same thing, but with conversion stories.
Every Protestant who comes home to Rome is a miracle.
evidence that the Holy Spirit is still working to unite Christ’s church.
I think about that October morning often.
I think about the arrogance Sarah brought to Carlo’s tomb and the humility she carried away from it.
I think about how close she came to leaving Aisi with her prejudices intact.
How she might have produced videos that led thousands further from the church.
But Carlo, my beautiful boy who loved Jesus so completely interceded from heaven at exactly the right moment.
This is who Carlo was in life and this is who he remains in death or rather in his eternal life with Christ.
He was never interested in condemning people who disagreed with him.
He was interested in showing them beauty so compelling they couldn’t help but be drawn to it.
He didn’t argue people into faith.
He loved them into it.
When Carlo was alive, he would spend hours explaining the Eucharist to his school friends, most of whom came from non-religious families.
He never made them feel stupid for not understanding.
He would use his computer skills to show them images of eucharistic miracles from around the world, letting the evidence speak for itself.
“Look,” he would say, pointing at photos of consecrated hosts that had turned into visible cardiac tissue.
Jesus wants us to know he’s really present.
He gives us signs so our faith isn’t blind.
That’s exactly what he did for Sarah.
He didn’t condemn her for attacking the church.
He showed her a sign so powerful, allowing her to see him alive in heaven, letting her experience his intercession, revealing her life through Christ’s eyes, that her intellectual arguments crumbled before the reality of supernatural love.
Sarah tells me that Carlo visits her in prayer sometimes.
Not dramatic visions like that first encounter, but quiet presences when she’s struggling with difficult theological questions or facing hatred from former Protestant allies.
She says he encourages her, reminds her that truth is worth the cost, shows her the souls being saved through her ministry of reconciliation.
Your son is my big brother now, she told me last time we spoke.
That’s how I think of him.
Not as some distant saint on a pedestal, but as an older brother in faith who loves me enough to keep teaching me, correcting me, guiding me.
That’s what Catholics understand about saints that Protestants miss, their family.
They’re the part of Christ’s body that has crossed the finish line, and they turn back to help those of us still running the race.
She paused, then added with a smile.
Carlo even has a sense of humor about it.
Sometimes when I’m being too serious in my videos, trying too hard to explain complex theology, I’ll hear in my heart this gentle reminder.
Sarah, I was 15 and I explained this stuff while talking about video games.
Lighten up.
He keeps me humble.
He keeps me real.
This is the miracle of Carlo’s intercession.
Not just physical healings, though those happen, but the healing of divisions that have fractured Christ’s church for 500 years.
Every Protestant who comes home to Catholicism because of Carlo’s example is a stone being placed back into the building, a member of Christ’s body being reunited with the whole.
Sarah’s conversion has become famous in both Catholic and Protestant circles.
But she insists it’s not unique.
Carlo is doing this for thousands of people.
She says, “I just happen to have a platform that made my conversion visible.
” But in churches and homes around the world, Protestants are encountering Carlo’s story and asking themselves the questions I was forced to ask.
What if we’ve been wrong? What if the Catholic Church is actually what it claims to be? What if Jesus really is present in the Eucharist? What if we’ve spent centuries fighting against our own family? These questions are uncomfortable for committed Protestants, just as they were excruciating for Sarah.
It’s not easy to admit that everything you’ve believed, everything you’ve taught, everything you’ve built your identity on might be fundamentally mistaken.
It requires humility that goes against every human instinct.
But that’s precisely what Carlo offers, the grace to embrace that humility because he was humble himself.
Despite his extraordinary faith, despite his daily mass attendance, despite his devotion that would lead to beatatification, Carlo never acted superior.
He dressed like his peers, played the same video games, loved the same animals.
He was holy without being holier than thou, devoted without being judgmental.
That’s what got through to me, Sarah explains.
I could dismiss popes and theologians as part of the Catholic establishment.
But Carlo, he was just a kid who loved Jesus and wanted everyone else to love Jesus, too.
There was no agenda, no political maneuvering, no institutional defensiveness, just pure faith.
When someone with that kind of pure faith intercedes for you, you can’t ignore it.
You can’t explain it away.
you can only respond.
And if this channel has been an answer for you, consider leaving a super thanks.
This financial help, however small it may seem, sustains this mission and allows us to continue bringing deep and transformative content to more lives that need this word.
Sarah’s response was conversion.
Others respond differently.
Some with ongoing exploration of Catholic teaching.
Some with improved relationships between Catholics and Protestants even without conversion.
Some with deeper appreciation for the historical church even while remaining Protestant.
But all of these responses share something in common.
They represent movement toward unity.
And unity, Sarah believes, is Carlo’s primary mission from heaven.
Jesus prayed that his followers would be one.
Sarah preaches now, just as he and the father are one.
That prayer has been fractured for 500 years by well-meaning people like I was who thought dividing the church was somehow serving Christ.
Carlo is showing us that the division breaks Jesus’s heart.
Every denomination, every split, every fracture represents failure to answer Jesus’s prayer.
Coming home to the Catholic Church isn’t about Catholics winning an argument.
It’s about Christians finally answering the prayer of their dying Lord that we would be one.
I listen to Sarah preach these truths and I hear my son’s heart in her words.
This is what Carlo would say if he could speak from heaven.
This is the message he lived and the mission he continues through saints like Sarah whom he has converted.
Three months ago, Sarah brought a group of 45 Protestant ministers to Aisi for a discernment retreat.
They spent a week studying Catholic theology, attending mass, praying before Carlo’s tomb, and wrestling with questions they’d never allowed themselves to ask honestly.
At the end of the week, 12 of those ministers committed to beginning the conversion process.
12 more asked to continue exploring.
The remaining 21 left unchanged in their Protestant convictions but with profoundly different attitudes toward Catholics.
Even those who don’t convert are blessed by Carlo.
Sarah told me afterward, “They leave a Cisi no longer seeing Catholics as the enemy.
They leave understanding that we share faith in Christ even if we disagree about the church.
” That change in heart, that movement from hostility to respect, that’s a miracle, too.
That’s Carlo building bridges between separated Christians.
Yesterday, I received an email from a Baptist woman in Tennessee.
She had read Sarah’s book and wanted to share her story.
For 40 years, she had believed Catholics were hellbound idoltors.
Then she encountered Carlo’s testimony, watched Sarah’s conversion video, and began questioning everything.
She started attending mass out of curiosity.
She was shocked by the reverence, the focus on scripture, the centrality of Jesus in the Eucharist.
6 months later, she entered the church.
Please thank your son for me, she wrote.
Thank him for loving Protestants enough to call us home.
Thank him for not giving up on us.
Thank him for showing us that the Catholic Church isn’t the enemy we were taught it was, but the mother we never knew we had.
