one could have predicted and nothing would ever be the same our channel brings you the untold stories of the Old West where love blooms in dust and hardship where family means everything and where compassion is the greatest act of bravery this story will remind you real love is never a grand gesture it’s the quiet choice to stay subscribe now because the best stories are the ones that stay with you long after they end that morning sun was barely thinking about climbing the sky when Yates Xander just gave out slumping forward over his horse’s neck a fever was burning him up from the inside so bad he could hardly see straight for the heat waves coming off his own body he’d been pushing hard for three straight days across the wide open country of western Nebraska herding a small bunch of cattle toward Council Bluffs Iowa when the sickness hit him fast and mean like a diamondback strike at first he figured it was just a scratchy throat and the trail wearing him down under that punishing August sun of 1876 but by the second day every muscle in his body screamed and by that third morning he knew he was in a world of trouble the herd had scattered in the night while he was out of his head now he was all alone on a prairie that never ended a far piece from any town homestead with nothing but grass in all directions and a sky so blue it nearly hurt his eyes Yates somehow got himself off the horse though he almost planted his face in the dust his legs were shaking as he LED his mount to a Little Creek he heard nearby the horse drank like it hadn’t seen water in a week while Yates just fell beside the bank shoving his whole head into the cool stream for about 10 seconds it was pure bliss then the fever came roaring right back he had to crawl to a lone cottonwood tree the only shade for miles around and lean himself against its trunk his canteen was all but dry and his food was down to some hardtack and jerky that his stomach wanted no part of he figured he had a day maybe two if he got lucky for the fever to break or to finish him off out here by himself with nobody knowing where he’d gone the odds weren’t looking good for him as the sun got higher Yates slipped in and out of knowing his fever dreams all tangled up with what was real until he couldn’t tell the difference he saw his boyhood back in Tennessee the war that took his paw and older brother and the long trip west his mama insisted on after the fighting stopped she’d been gone three years now taken by cholera leaving Yates at 22 to fend for himself in a world that seemed set on crushing any man without family or money he’d done it all from ranch hand to trail driver whatever job would put a meal in his belly and a roof over his head this cattle drive was supposed to be his big chance the one that would earn him enough to buy a little patch of land and build something of his own but now it looked like the prairie was fixing to swallow him whole just like it had so many others before him now Penelope Dalton had been in the saddle since before the sun was up riding her mare hard over the grasslands she was hunting for strays from her father’s herd cattle that had wandered off in a storm a couple of nights back her daddy Samuel Dalton owned one of the bigger spreads near the Nebraska and Iowa line and though he had plenty of ranch hands Penelope was always the best tracker they had it was a skill her mother taught her who herself Learned it from a pony woman who’d worked on their land once Penelope could read stories in the dirt and grass that most men would ride right over she was 19 years old with her long Chestnut hair in a braid down her back and green eyes that could pick a calf out of a thicket from 100 yards her own mama had passed on when Penelope was 15 and she’d been shouldering more and more of the ranch work ever since her father sometimes fretted that she was all work and no play with no time for the local boys who came calling but Penelope had no use for the clumsy efforts of the cowboys who mostly looked at her like a prize to be won instead of a person to get to know she felt more at home with her horses under an open sky the wind on her face and the freedom to ride wherever she pleased at least as far as her father’s property line went she’d been on the trail of those strays for hours when she saw something strange way off it was a horse still wearing a saddle just grazing by a cottonwood there was no rider and that set off alarm bells in her mind right away a cowboy worth his salt never leaves his horse saddled like that unless something is terribly wrong she urged her mare on her hand finding the comforting stock of the rifle tied to her saddle when she got closer she made out the shape of a man slumped against the tree hardly moving at all Penelope slid off her horse in a hurry ground tying the mare before she walked toward the fella cautious like he was young just a few years older than her she guessed with dark hair stuck to his forehead with sweat his skin looked pale under his sun darkened tan and even from a ways back she could see he was shaking she knelt down beside him and laid the back of her hand on his forehead he was burning like a furnace she was surprised he was even breathing with a fever that high hey there she said giving his shoulder a gentle shake Mister can you hear me Yates’s eyes fluttered but they wouldn’t focus he mumbled some words she couldn’t make out his voice all thick and lost Penelope scanned the area sizing up the whole mess they were at least 10 miles from her daddy’s ranch and maybe 15 from the closest town trying to move him like this could kill him but leaving him here was a sure death sentence she bit her lip her mind racing the sun was getting hotter and it was already pushing 90 degrees if she was gonna help this man she had to cool that fever down first get some water into him and then worry about getting him somewhere safe she went over to his horse a well built sorrel gelding who gave her a weary look but didn’t put up a fuss she searched through the saddle bags and found a canteen that was nearly empty and a bedroll but not much else she took his bedroll and her own things back to the cottonwood and spread a blanket in the shade as quick as she could then she took both their canteens to the creek and filled them with fresh cool water when she got back she gently lifted Yates’s head and tried to help him drink he coughed and sputtered at first but his body’s deep thirst finally took over and he managed to swallow a few mouthfuls before his head fell back Penelope soaked her Bandana in the creek and pressed the cool wet cloth to his forehead his neck and his wrists she’d watched her mother nurse sick hands through fevers plenty of times and she remembered the important parts keep them cool give them water and say a prayer that the sickness would pass before it took them she worked without stopping dipping the cloth again and again as the sun dried it out coaxing tiny sips of water past his cracked lips and whispering soft words of comfort that he probably couldn’t even hear the hours dragged on the sun hit its highest point in the sky and began its slow journey west Penelope did not leave him a part of her knew she ought to ride back to the ranch for help to fetch a wagon and her father’s men but something held her there maybe it was her mother’s voice in her memory saying that to leave a sick soul alone was a sin or maybe it was the look of the man’s face which even in its feverish state seemed kind like someone who’d had a hard go but hadn’t let it turn him mean or perhaps it was just her own stubborn streak the same one that wouldn’t let her give up on a green horse or a weak Newborn calf for whatever reason Penelope stayed put as evening drew near Yates’s fever seemed to get even worse he began to toss and turn muttering things she couldn’t understand his body fighting a battle she could not see Penelope managed to get him situated on the bedroll using her saddle blanket to cushion his head she built a small fire as the air began to cool knowing that even with a fever the night chill could be dangerous once the sun was gone from some dried beef in her own saddle bags she made a thin broth and got a few spoonfuls into him before he turned away the prairie night settled in around them filled with the sounds of crickets and the far off howl of coyotes Penelope sat with her back to the cottonwood tree the sick man’s head resting near her on a blanket she kept the fire fed and her watch going always changing the cool compress and offering him water whenever he stirred she slept in short bursts snapping awake with every little sound always checking to be sure he was still breathing that he was still in the fight it was in that quiet time just before dawn that the fever finally broke Penelope noticed the change first in his breathing how it eased and deepened and how his restless movements calmed into what looked like real sleep she touched her hand to his forehead again and felt that the terrible burning heat was gone though he was still warm a wave of relief washed over her so powerfully that her eyes stung with tears she hadn’t let herself realize just how terrified she had been how sure she was that she was watching a man die until the moment the danger had passed Yates woke up slowly his mind coming back to him in pieces his first thought was that he must be dead because he was sure an angel was looking after him but as his eyes began to clear he saw that the woman leaning over him was very real with a smudge of dirt on her cheek and pure exhaustion etched in her face the first thing he saw were the greenest eyes he had ever laid eyes on and they were watching him with a mix of relief and worry you are awake she said her voice as soothing as a cool drink of water on a scorching day how are you feeling Yates tried to answer but his throat felt as dry as a dusty creek bed she seemed to understand lifting his head gently and holding a canteen to his lips he drank like a man who had been lost in the desert and that water was the finest thing he had ever tasted when he was done he managed to rasp out a single word better she gave him a small smile and even as weak as he was Yates felt a little flutter deep in his chest good you gave me one heck of a scare I found you yesterday morning burning up with a bad fever you have been plum out of your head for almost a whole day and night he struggled to take that in a whole day this woman a complete stranger had stayed by his side for a full day and night all alone out on the open plains nursing him through a sickness that could have easily killed him why he managed to get out Penelope’s smile turned a bit more serious because I could not live with myself if I left a man to die all by himself my name is Penelope Dalton my daddy owns a ranch about 10 miles east of here Yates he said his voice getting a little stronger with every word Yates Xander I was pushing a herd toward Council Bluffs when I got sick he stopped as a terrible realization hit him like a punch the cattle they scattered I lost them cattle can be found or you can get more Penelope said with a firm voice your life cannot you need to rest now when you are strong enough to sit a horse I will take you to my father’s ranch you need some real food and a proper bed not just a bedroll underneath a Mesquite tree Yates wanted to protest to tell her he had to find those cattle that his entire future was riding on finishing that drive but his body had other ideas and a deep exhaustion started pulling him back into sleep the very last thing he saw before his eyelids closed was Penelope’s face glowing in the early morning light watching him with a protectiveness that made his heart ache in a way that had nothing to do with any fever he slept through most of the morning waking up every so often to find Penelope still there ready with a sip of water or a little something to eat she had somehow caught a rabbit and made a real stew which she fed to him in small bites to let his stomach get used to food again by that afternoon he felt strong enough to sit up without any help though the world still spun a little you are a very good nurse he said as he took another cup of broth your mother must have taught you a shadow of an old sadness crossed Penelope’s face she did she passed away four years ago pneumonia took her one winter it came on fast and took her even faster I am truly sorry Yates said and he meant it with all his heart I lost my own mother three years back it was the cholera it is a hard thing to be all alone in this world Penelope looked him right in the eyes and in that moment they understood each other without having to say a thing they had both felt that kind of loss they had both Learned to be strong because the only other option was to fall to pieces they had both found themselves making their way through a world that is often unkind to folks who have no family to stand with them are you not married Yates asked then right away felt like an idiot of course she was not or she would not be out here by herself tending to a strange cowboy but Penelope did not seem bothered by his question no most fellas around here want a wife who will stay in the house and cook and sew and give them children I’m not very good at staying in the house she said it as a matter of fact with no shame or apology in her voice what about you I have never had the money or the stability to offer a good woman anything worthwhile Yates confessed I have been drifting from one job to another ever since the war ended this cattle drive was supposed to change all of that I was going to be paid enough to maybe buy a little piece of land start building something that was mine he trailed off then looking out at the empty prairie stretching all around them now you are alive Penelope said firmly which means you can just find a different way the world does not come to an end just because one of your plans did not work out she stood up brushing the dirt from her split riding skirt can you stand we should probably try to get you up on your horse see if you can make the ride back to the ranch my father will be worried and you need a real bed and some hot food Yates took her offered hand and let her help him stand the whole world tilted something awful for a moment but her steady grip kept him on his feet until his balance came back he realized then that she was strong not just in her spirit but in her body as well he could feel the lean hard muscle in her arm the sure way she planted her feet this was a woman who was used to hard work and did not back away from a challenge they made their way to the horses and with Penelope’s help Yates managed to pull himself up into the saddle his sorrel gelding shifted under his weight but held its ground Penelope mounted her own mare with an easy Grace then brought her horse close enough so she could grab his reins if he started to sway we will take it slow she said if you need to stop you tell me a man’s pride is not worth dying for the ride to the Dalton Ranch took a few long hours Yates’s strength faded as they went and he had to stop and rest two times but Penelope never showed a bit of impatience or frustration she simply waited offered him a drink of water and then they would start again the sun was just beginning to sink toward the horizon when they finally came over a small hill and Yates saw the ranch all spread out below them it was a big operation much larger than he would have guessed the main house was a sturdy two story building made of timber and stone with a wide porch that wrapped all the way around the front there were several barns corrals filled with horses and cattle bunkhouses for the ranch hands and a number of other buildings that Yates could only guess the purpose of smoke was rising from the chimney of the main house and Yates could see people moving about doing their evening chores like tiny figures off in the distance as they rode into the main yard a man came out of the house walking with the determined stride of someone who was both relieved and angry he was a tall broad shouldered man with hair that was more grey than brown and a face that was weathered from decades of sun and wind that must be Samuel Dalton Yates thought and he braced himself for the anger of a father whose daughter had been missing for over a day without any word Penelope Grace Dalton Samuel called out and his voice carried clear across the yard where in the name of all that is good have you been I was about to send all the men out to search for you Penelope dismounted and walked toward her father her chin held high in that stubborn way Yates was already starting to recognize I found a man dying of a fever out on the range I could not just leave him so I stayed with him and nursed him through it he is weak but he is recovering we need to get him inside get some proper food in him and let him rest in a real bed Samuel’s anger disappeared just as quickly as it had shown up replaced by concern and something that looked a lot like pride he looked past his daughter at Yates who was trying his very best to sit straight in the saddle even though he felt like he might fall right over at any second can you walk son yes sir Yates said and he dismounted with more care than Grace his legs were wobbly but he managed to stay standing through pure stubbornness Samuel stepped forward took Yates’s arm and put it over his own shoulders you stubborn fool driving cattle by yourself in this kind of heat you are lucky my daughter found you come on let us get you inside Penelope you tell Maria we are going to need some broth and bread and make up the guest room the next couple of hours went by in a haze for Yates he was settled into a comfortable room on the second floor of the house helped into a clean night shirt that must have belonged to Samuel Dalton and fed warm broth by a stern faced Mexican woman named Maria who seemed to be equal part’s housekeeper and a member of the family she fussed over him like a mother hen muttering in Spanish about silly young men who did not have the sense that god gave a goat but her hands were gentle when she checked his forehead for a fever and made sure he ate every single drop of the broth she had made Penelope appeared at the doorway a few times checking on him with those sharp green eyes every single time Yates felt his heart do a funny little flutter in his chest a feeling that had nothing to do with being sick and everything to do with the woman who had saved his life he tried his best to thank her but she just waved his words away rest she said plain and simple we can talk when you are stronger Yates slept soundly that night the first truly deep sleep he had gotten in days he woke the next morning to the sun streaming in his window and the wonderful smell of bacon and coffee drifting up from downstairs his fever had broken for good and it left him feeling weak but with a clear head he managed to get into his own clothes which someone had kindly washed and left folded on a chair and he made his way downstairs on legs that still felt a bit unsteady the dining room was a warm and lived in space with a long table that could have easily seated a dozen people Samuel Dalton was sitting at the head of the table reading a newspaper and drinking his coffee Penelope was sitting to his right already dressed for her day in practical riding clothes with her hair in that braid he had already gotten used to seeing Maria came bustling in from the kitchen carrying a big platter of eggs and bacon and she was followed by a younger woman with the same dark hair and eyes who had to be her daughter good you are up Samuel said motioning to an empty chair sit down before you fall down Maria get this boy some food he looks like a strong wind would blow him right over him a seat Yates sank down with gratitude taking the offered plate the food tasted like a miracle after being laid up for days with fever and a weak heart and he ate slow mindful of his tender stomach while he ate Samuel asked about his past his line of work and what he had planned Yates told him the straight truth laying out the story of the cattle drive the sickness and the herd he’d lost Samuel chewed on that for a moment those cattle have a brand son he asked belong to a rancher named Tom Hutchkins his spread is about 60 miles west of here he hired me to push them up to the stockyards in Council Bluffs I was meant to meet his full crew there but I reckon I’ve missed that appointment Samuel gave a slow nod Hutchkins is a decent man I know of him he won’t hold this against you not when he hears you nearly died in the trying but you’ll need to get word to him let him know the situation the meantime you ought to stay put and get your strength back no sense in you wandering back onto the prairie half gone you can work for me for a spell get back on your feet and earn a little something to make up for what you lost gratitude swelled up in Yates’s chest sir I’m at a loss for words that’s mighty generous it’s just practical Samuel said cutting him off I can always use another good hand especially one my daughter says has the sense god gave a goose and doesn’t abuse his horse he cast a quick look over at Penelope who was trying her best to look like butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth besides you owe Penelope your life the least you can do is stick around long enough for us to see you’re fully mended and just like that Yates Xander found himself much to his surprise a temporary hand on the Dalton ranch for the first several days he was only tasked with light chores he mended tack helped Maria in her kitchen garden and handled other small jobs that kept him near the main house but as his body healed Samuel started giving him bigger responsibilities Yates proved he was a capable man a natural with horses and cattle who wasn’t afraid of hard work and Learned fast he also began spending more and more of his time with Penelope she had a way of just appearing at his side whether he was working in the corral or riding out to check on the herd their conversations came easy flowing from one thing to another without effort she told him what it was like growing up on the ranch and about her mother passing and how that had changed everything for her family he told her about his home in Tennessee how the war had torn his childhood apart and about his dream to one day have a piece of land to call his own why land Penelope asked him one afternoon while they were riding along the ranch’s northern fence line why not just keep on as a hired hand it’s less to worry about less risk Yates was silent for a bit trying to find the right words because I want to build something that belongs to me he finally said something nobody can just take from me or burn to the ground or tell me I’m not good enough for it might sound foolish but I want to know my sweat and blood are going into something solid something that might even be around after I’m gone Penelope nodded taking it in that’s not foolish at all I know what it’s like to want to build something that’s what my father did it’s what my mother helped him do this whole ranch is what they’re leaving behind sometimes I wonder what I’ll leave this ranch could be yours Yates pointed out your PA won’t be around forever and you know this place better than anyone maybe Penelope said but she didn’t I sound too sure but plenty of folks believe a woman can’t run a ranch by herself my father has cousins back east who’ve dropped hints that when he passes this place ought to go to a man who can handle it right they don’t care that I’ve been helping run it since I was fifteen hearing that injustice made Yates’s blood run hot he’d seen Penelope in action she was as capable as any man on that spread and more so than most the thought of her being overlooked just because she was a woman felt wrong and downright cruel then you’ll just have to prove them all wrong he said firmly you’ll have to show them you can run this place better than any man they could ever find Penelope offered him a smile and Yates felt that funny little jump in his chest again I like the way you think Yates Xander as the weeks turned over Yates started to understand that what he felt for Penelope Dalton went way beyond simple gratitude or friendship he was falling for her hard and fast and there was no turning back it was in the way his spirits lifted just by seeing her it was in the excuses he made up just to be near her and how her laughter could make the toughest day feel easy he loved her grit and her stubborn streak her deep kindness and her quiet confidence he loved how she sat a horse like she was born to it how she could calm a wild Colt with a steady hand and a soft voice and the way she looked out at the prairie like it was the grandest painting in the world but Yates also knew the hard truth he had nothing to give her he was a wandering man with no property no money and no prospects besides the next wage Samuel paid him Penelope Dalton deserved a man who was already established someone who could give her the safety and life she was owed so he kept his feelings locked down tight buried where they couldn’t cause trouble for either of them what Yates didn’t realize was that Penelope was fighting the very same battle inside herself she hadn’t planned on falling for the cowboy she’d found near death out on the range love had just snuck up on her like a slow prairie sunrise that starts with a hint of light and then suddenly floods the whole sky she loved his quiet determination the way he worked without a single complaint and the gentleness he showed with every animal she loved hearing about his dreams of building something that would last and his refusal to let a hard life turn him bitter she loved the way he looked at her as if he saw someone worth respecting not just the boss’s daughter or a prize to be won for her inheritance but Penelope was practical and knew how things stood her father liked Yates just fine as a ranch hand but that was a far cry from approving of him as a son in law Samuel Dalton wanted his daughter to Mary Smart to a man with his own land and money someone who could take care of her and help keep the ranch strong for the future a drifting cowboy no matter how good his heart just didn’t fit into that plan the unspoken feelings between them stretched out like a tight wire humming with a tension that was bound to break it finally snapped one evening in late September the seasons had started to turn the blistering heat of August was softening into cool nights with the first taste of fall in the air Yates had been on the ranch for nearly six weeks and Samuel had mentioned that he was welcome to stay on for good if he wanted it was a fine offer more than Yates could have ever hoped for but the thought of staying on as just another hired hand watching Penelope eventually marry some other man was a pain he couldn’t face he was in the barn getting the horses settled for the night when Penelope came looking for him she stood in this wide doorway framed by the setting sun and for a second Yates clean forgot to breathe she walked toward him her face impossible to read in the dim light you’re planning on leaving she said it wasn’t a question it was a statement Yates put down the brush he was using on his horse and turned to her straight on I’ve been thinking on it your father’s been more than fair but I can’t be a hired hand forever I’ve got to find my own way start building that thing I want and what is it you want Penelope asked stepping even closer Yates felt all the walls he’d built around his heart start to shake I want land of my own he said a place to build a house raise some cattle maybe even a family one day I want something that’s real something that lasts with anyone special Penelope’s voice was quiet but her gaze was sharp as a hawk Yates knew he should tell a white lie to protect them both from the messiness of his feelings but standing there with her in the fading light with her looking at him like he held the one answer she needed to hear he just couldn’t do it with you he said plain and simple to be honest every single thing I want in this world involves you but I’ve got nothing to offer you Penelope I’m just a cowboy with empty pockets no land and no future beyond my next paycheck you deserve a whole lot more than that Penelope closed the last bit of space between them and raised a hand to touch his cheek so gentle it made his heart ache you really are a fool Yates Xander she whispered do you honestly think I care about money or land I’ve got land I know how to work a ranch what I don’t have is a partner someone who sees what I can do and respects it who doesn’t want to turn me into some proper lady I’m not what I don’t have is someone who makes me feel like my heart is about to beat right out of my chest just by walking into a room what I don’t have is you Yates just stared at her not daring to believe the words he was hearing Penelope I can’t ask you to throw away your home your inheritance for a man who’s got nothing but dreams you’re not asking Penelope’s voice was strong and sure I’m offering I love you Yates I think I’ve loved you since you looked at me with those feverish eyes and put your trust in me to save you I’ve loved you every day since then watching you work and dream and just be so decent to every person and animal you meet I don’t give a damn if you have land or money we can get those things together what I can’t do is build a life with a man I don’t love no matter how many acres he owns Yates felt something inside his chest just break wide open letting loose a flood of emotion he’d been holding back for weeks he pulled Yates pulled Penelope into his arms clutching her as if she were the most precious treasure on earth because to him she was I love you he murmured into her hair Lord have mercy I love you more than I ever figured a man could love a woman Penelope leaned her head back and Yates met her lips this was not some shy first kiss it was a bold statement a solemn vow a claiming of her heart she answered him with the same fire her fingers weaving through his hair and her body fitting perfectly against his when they finally pulled away for air Penelope was grinning in a way that made Yates want to start all over again so what comes next he asked I reckon your father will not be too pleased about his daughter falling for a simple ranch hand Penelope’s smile got a little devious in that case we will just have to persuade him that you are more than a ranch hand that you are a man with vision and ambition and the strength to help build something truly special you just leave my daddy to me getting Samuel Dalton on their side turned out to be less of a battle than either had braced for though it had its share of tense moments when Penelope declared at supper the following evening that she and Yates were in love and planned to be married Samuel’s face cycled through a few shades of surprise he took a long minute to look from his daughter to Yates and then back to his daughter again you are serious about this he finally stated as serious as a heart attack Penelope answered her voice steady and sure Yates is a good man daddy you know that you have watched him work and seen his character I love him and he loves me I am asking for your blessing but I’m going to marry him whether I have it or not Samuel shifted his gaze to Yates who was trying his hardest not to look like he was about to make a run for the door and you what have you got to say for yourself Yates drew a deep breath and looked Samuel straight in the eye sir I am aware that I cannot offer your daughter much when it comes to money or property but I can give you my word that I will work harder than any man you know to make sure she is happy and cared for I love her Mr Dalton I will spend the rest of my days trying to be the man she deserves Samuel was silent for what felt like a lifetime then a slow smile started to spread across his weathered face you know my wife’s father said nearly the same thing to me when I asked for her hand he was a rich man with a huge spread down in Texas I was a nobody just a cowpoke with big ideas and empty pockets but Sarah she loved me and she talked her father into giving us a shot it was the best choice any of us ever made he rose from his chair walked over and stuck out his hand to Yates you have my blessing son but if you ever cause her a moment’s pain I will hunt you down to the ends of the earth Yates took Samuel’s hand a wave of relief washing over him I understand completely sir thank you there is one condition though Samuel said his face growing serious this ranch is going to be Penelope’s one day that means it will be yours too if you marry her but I have to know you understand what that means this is not about you riding in and taking charge this is about you being a partner to my daughter backing her up and respecting her know how and judgment can you handle that yes sir Yates answered without a second thought Penelope knows this land better than I ever could I would be a fool not to listen to her besides that is what I want a real partnership not me being the boss Samuel nodded looking pleased well then it looks like we have a wedding to plan Maria’s going to be beside herself with excitement that woman has been trying to marry off Penelope for ages they were married in early November of 1876 in a quiet ceremony right there at the ranch the local preacher said the words and nearly all the ranch hands and neighboring families came to watch Penelope wore her mother’s wedding gown which had been kept safe in a trunk for years and was altered just a bit to fit her taller build Yates wore a brand new suit that Samuel insisted on buying saying his future son in law could not get hitched in dusty dungarees and a work shirt as Yates watched Penelope come toward him with the autumn sun making her hair shine like polished copper he thought about how close he had come to dying out on the open range if Penelope had not found him if she had not stayed by his side and nursed him back to life he would never have known a happiness like this it felt unbelievable that just a few months earlier they were complete strangers and now they were about to pledge their lives to one another but sometimes the greatest blessings in life show up when you are not looking for them created from hardship luck and the simple choice to help another soul in their time of need the service was brief but full of meaning when the preacher declared them husband and wife Yates kissed Penelope with all the love thankfulness and hope that filled his heart the guests all cheered and Maria wiped her eyes on her apron mumbling in Spanish about beautiful young love the party that came after was a loud and joyful affair tables were set up in the yard piled high with food that Maria and some of the other ranch wives had cooked up there was roasted beef and warm bread pies made from the last of the season’s apples and plenty of cider and beer for anyone who was thirsty somebody brought out a fiddle and before long music was drifting through the air getting folks up on their feet for a dance Yates danced with his new bride then with Maria and then with a few of the neighbor women who wanted to give him a proper welcome to the community Penelope danced with her father and with tears running down both of their cheeks Yates felt a lump form in his own throat just watching them as the sun went down and lanterns were lit Yates gently LED Penelope away from the crowd taking her to the barn where they had first admitted their feelings for each other they stood there in the quiet darkness listening to the distant sounds of the party holding each other close are you happy Yates asked placing a soft kiss on the top of her head unbelievably happy Penelope answered looking up at him with those green eyes that had captured him from the very first time he saw them I have something to tell you though what is that when I found you out on the prairie burning up with fever I just had this feeling as if fate itself had brought you to my doorstep for a reason I told myself I was being silly that I was just taking care of a sick fella and that would be all but deep down a part of me knew even then that you were going to change my whole life Yates smiled and touched her cheek you changed mine you saved it in more ways than I can count I was just drifting before I met you Penelope just going from one town to the next with no real aim other than to get by you gave me a reason to build something that would last something true you gave me a home they kissed one more time a slow and gentle kiss that held the promise of all the years ahead when they finally walked back to the Celebration holding hands the stars were starting to pop out in the sky a million points of light were scattered all across the huge Texas sky the first year they were married was all about learning and making adjustments Yates had to get used to the thought that this ranch was his home now that he was more than just a hired man but a full partner in everything Samuel was a great teacher showing him the business end of ranching from the contracts and the bargaining to the relationships with cattle buyers that kept the place running well Penelope taught him about the land itself the best spots for grazing where to find water even in the driest years which cows were the best mothers and which ones needed to be separated from the herd they also Learned about each other all the little private details of being married Yates Learned that Penelope was a bit cranky in the morning before her first cup of coffee that she talked to the horses like they were old friends and that she cried at weddings but never at funerals Penelope found out that Yates sometimes had bad dreams about the war that he was ticklish right behind his left ear and that he could not sing a note but hummed off key while he worked anyway they had their disagreements that is for sure Yates sometimes let his pride get in the way finding it tough to admit that Penelope often knew better when it came to running the ranch Penelope sometimes had a hard time including him in choices she had been making on her own for years but they Learned to talk things out to remember they were a team and that respecting each other was more important than winning an argument by the spring of 1878 they had settled into a good rhythm the ranch was doing better than ever under their shared guidance Yates had shown he was not just a good ranch hand but also a sharp negotiator and businessman landing good deals for their cattle and finding new markets Penelope kept on running the day to day work with the same skill and care she always had working together they were building something much bigger than what either of them could have done alone it was in June of that year that Penelope told Yates she was expecting their first baby he was in the barn putting a new shoe on a horse when she showed up in the doorway with a strange look on her face he put his tools down right away worried something was wrong what is it he asked walking toward her nothing is wrong Penelope said and then she broke into a smile that was both brilliant and a little bit scared I am going to have a baby we are going to have a baby Yates felt like the wind had been knocked right out of him but in the best possible way way a child it was their child he gathered Penelope into his arms handling her with the care you would give a delicate treasure are you certain he asked well Maria says all the signs are pointing that way and she has helped bring half the babies in this county into the world she is rarely wrong about these things Penelope leaned back to study his face does this make you happy I know we have not discussed children much but I truly want this baby Yates I want to raise a family right here with you happy does not come close to what I feel Yates said his voice thick with emotion I am scared to death and overjoyed and so very thankful all rolled into one we are going to be a mother and a father Samuel was thrilled by the news he immediately declared that Penelope was not to lift anything heavier than a dinner fork around the ranch Penelope just rolled her eyes at their sudden fussing but she agreed to take things easier especially as the months went by and her body began to change Yates fussed and worried over her in a way that Penelope found both aggravating and sweet but she put up with it knowing it was all because he loved her their son came into the world in February of 1879 during a cold spell so fierce it froze the water trough solid and had everyone huddled close to their fires the birthing was a long and hard road with Maria and the local midwife helping Yates wore a rut in the floorboards pacing the hallway just outside the bedroom door listening to Penelope’s cries and feeling utterly useless Samuel sat with him offering quiet words of comfort that did little to calm his frayed nerves when Maria finally came out a wide smile on her face and told him he had a son and that Penelope was worn out but just fine Yates nearly buckled from sheer relief he hurried into the bedroom and found Penelope propped on the pillows exhausted and beaded with sweat and looking more beautiful than he had ever seen her she was holding a small bundle wrapped tight in blankets she looked up at him her eyes glistening with tears come and meet your son she whispered Yates moved toward the bed slowly almost reverently and gazed down at the tiny face peeking out from the wrappings his son had a wild tuft of dark hair and eyes that were still a Newborn blue though they might turn brown or green as he got older he had impossibly small perfect fingers that instinctively curled when Yates gently touched them looking at his child at this new life he and Penelope had made together Yates felt a wave of emotions so powerful he could not name them love was there of course but also a fierce need to protect him a resolve to be the kind of father this boy deserved and to give him the steady loving home that Yates himself had lost so very young he is perfect Yates whispered what are we going to name him they had talked about names while she was expecting but none had felt quite right now looking at her son Penelope said Samuel for my father he has been so good to the both of us Yates I want to honor him Yates nodded his throat too tight with emotion to speak he leaned down and kissed Penelope’s forehead and then his sons Samuel Xander that is a fine strong name little Samuel was a healthy and happy baby who seemed to have his mother’s determined spirit and his father’s calm nature as he grew it was plain to see he also had his mother’s green eyes and his father’s dark hair a perfect mix of the two of them Samuel Dalton absolutely adored his grandson he spent hours rocking him or just carrying him around the ranch pointing out the horses and cattle and telling him stories about his own mother when she was a little girl life found a new rhythm one that moved to the patterns of ranch work and the needs of a growing child Yates and Penelope worked side by side like a well oiled machine running the ranch and raising their son they brought on more help so Penelope could spend the mornings with Samuel before she went out to manage the day’s work Yates Learned how to balance the account books with a sleeping baby cradled in one arm Maria became like a grandmother to the boy teaching him songs in Spanish and sneaking him sweet treats when his parents were not looking as Samuel grew from a baby to a toddler and then a young boy the ranch thrived Yates’s name as a fair man and a skilled rancher spread far and wide and the Dalton Xander Ranch became one of the most respected outfits in the whole territory when Samuel Dalton passed on peacefully in his sleep in 1885 at the age of 67 it was a sad day but not a shocking one he had lived to see his grandson grow into a bright and lively six year old boy who loved horses and the open prairie as much as his mother and grandfather always had he had seen his daughter happy and prosperous with the ranch safe in the hands of people who loved it and each other it was as Yates said at the service a good life that was lived to the fullest Penelope mourned her father something fierce but she found comfort knowing he had been proud of her and proud of what she and Yates had made together the ranch officially became theirs although they had really been running it for years they kept everything the same holding to the high standard Samuel had always set and just kept building on the strong foundation he had laid more children came along a daughter they named rose was born in 1881 and then another son Daniel in 1884 each new baby was a cause for Celebration each child a true blessing the house was filled with the sound of laughter and the happy commotion of children growing up Samuel being the oldest took his job as big brother very seriously he watched over his younger brother and sister with a protective streak that reminded Yates so much of Penelope rose was a wild and fearless little thing climbing trees and riding horses before she could hardly walk giving her parents plenty of grey hairs with her adventures Daniel was the quiet one more thoughtful with a special touch for calming animals that even Penelope had to admire Yates often found his mind wandering back to that day on the open range when he had collapsed from fever absolutely certain he was going to die alone out in that vast emptiness he thought about Penelope riding out to find him staying right by his side through the worst of it and refusing to just leave him to his fate that one choice that simple act of human kindness had changed the entire course of both their lives it had given him everything he had ever dared to dream of and a whole lot more a home a family and a partnership founded on love respect and shared dreams it was a legacy that would surely carry on long after they were both gone as the years went by the love between Yates and Penelope only grew deeper they had faced down droughts and hard winters sickness in the herd and tight finances all the usual troubles that life throws at you but they had faced it all together and every challenge they overcame just tied them closer they still worked alongside each other on the ranch though they now had good foreman and steady ranch hands to handle most of the day to day work they taught their children about the value of hard work the importance of treating all people and animals with decency and the need to stand up for what is right no matter how hard it might be on their 10th wedding anniversary in November of 1886 Yates took Penelope back to that same cottonwood tree where she had first found him it was a cold day with winter already settling its grip on the prairie but the tree was still standing alone guard on the wide open range they stood together on the very spot where Penelope had watched over him all those years ago where she had fought for his life and without knowing it for the future they would share I can still remember how scared I was Penelope said leaning against Yates as they looked out across the endless grass you were so terribly sick and I just knew that if the fever did not break you would die I just kept thinking that I could not let that happen that you were meant for something better than dying all alone out on the prairie I did not know it then but what you were meant for was me and for us and for this whole life we would build together Yates turned her to face him gently holding her face in his hands you saved my life that day Penelope but you did more than that you gave my life a purpose everything that I am everything that I have and everything I ever hope to be it all started because you chose to stay when anyone else would have just ridden on by I love you more than words can ever say I will love you until my last day on this earth and even after if the good Lord allows it they kissed right there under the cottonwood tree the same one that had given them shelter in their darkest time now standing as a witness to their happiness the wind blew hard around them cold and biting but they were warm in each other’s arms shielded by a love they had built piece by piece day by day and choice by choice the years kept rolling on marked by the turning of the seasons and the big moments in their children’s lives Samuel grew into a fine young man and took on more and more responsibility at the ranch and it was clear to everyone that he would one day run the place himself he fell in love with the daughter of a neighboring rancher a smart and capable young woman named Catherine who reminded Yates a great deal of Penelope they got married in 1896 when Samuel was 17 and Catherine was 18 in a wedding that was even bigger and happier than Yates and Penelope’s had been rose staying true to her wild spirit took a bit longer to settle down she worked on the ranch right alongside her brothers refusing to be pushed into the roles people expected of a woman she eventually fell for a horse trader who came through the area regularly a man who loved her fierce independence and could match her spirit for spirit Daniel the youngest had a true gift for working with troubled horses he started a training business on a far corner of the ranch and earned a reputation all across the territory for his patience and his skill by 19 Yates and Penelope wer
