They climbed the steps to the wide porch and Harrison knocked firmly on the door.
The man who answered was perhaps 50 years old with graying hair and sharp blue eyes that took in the situation immediately.
He looked from Harrison to Delilah and back again, his expression unreadable.
“Sam, this is Delilah Zimmerman.
” Harrison said she needs help.
And I told her she could find it here.
May we come in? Samuel Cooper studied them for another moment.
then stepped back and gestured them inside.
The house was cooler than the air outside with high ceilings and windows positioned to catch the breeze.
He led them to a comfortable sitting room and indicated they should sit, taking a seat himself in a leather chair that had clearly been positioned as the head of the room.
“Now then,” Samuel said, his voice carrying the authority of a man used to making decisions.
“Suppose you tell me what brings you to my ranch, Miss Zimmerman.
” Once again, Delilah explained her situation, though this time she found herself able to speak more calmly with Harrison’s steady presence beside her.
She told Samuel about her father’s treatment of her, though she downplayed the worst of it out of habit, and about Ernest Dalton’s offer.
She explained that she had nowhere else to go and no means to support herself, but that she was willing to work for her keep if he would allow her to stay.
Samuel listened without interrupting, his expression growing more troubled as her story unfolded.
When she finished, he sat back in his chair and regarded her thoughtfully.
“I know your father by reputation, Fui,” he said finally.
“And I know Ernest Dalton as well.
” “Neither man is someone I would wish on any woman of good character.
” He turned to Harrison.
“You have vouched for her by bringing her here.
What are you proposing we do?” Let her stay, Harrison said immediately.
We have the space, and I know Martha has been saying she could use help with the cooking and housekeeping now that her arthritis is getting worse.
Martha, Delilah would later learn, was Samuel’s wife, a kind woman who managed the household.
Miss Zimmerman is a hard worker, and she deserves a chance to build a life free from abuse.
Her father will come looking for her, Samuel pointed out.
Jacob Zimmerman strikes me as the type to make trouble when he does not get his way.
Then we deal with that when it happens.
Harrison’s jaw was set in a stubborn line, but we do not send her back to him.
Samuel studied them both for a long moment, and Delilah held her breath.
Finally, he nodded.
“All right, Miss Zimmerman, you may stay here and work for the household.
We will provide you room and board and a small wage for your labor.
If your father comes calling, we will handle the situation as it arises.
He stood, extending his hand to her.
Welcome to the Triple Bar Ranch.
The relief was so overwhelming she nearly wept as she shook his hand.
Thank you, she managed.
Thank you so much.
I promise I will work hard.
You will not regret this.
I am sure I will not.
Samuel’s expression softened slightly.
Harrison, why do not you help Miss Zimmerman get settled and then bring her to meet Martha? I suspect my wife will be glad of the company.
As they left the main house, Harrison walking beside her toward a smaller building that served as housing for the household staff and female workers.
Delila felt as though she were moving through a dream.
Everything had happened so quickly.
And yet, she found herself in a completely different world from the one she had woken up in that morning.
A world where people offered help without expecting cruelty in return.
Where she might actually have a future beyond servitude and fear.
“Are you all right?” Harrison asked quietly as they walked.
“I know this is a lot to take in.
” “I do not know what I am,” she admitted.
Relieved, terrified, grateful.
“All of it at once, I think.
” He stopped walking and turned to face her, his expression serious.
“I want you to know something, Delilah.
You are safe here.
Whatever happens, whatever your father tries to do, you will not be forced to go back to him or to marry Ernest Dalton.
I give you my word.
Why? The question she had asked before echoed between them again.
Why do you care what happens to me? You barely know me.
Harrison was quiet for a moment, his gaze holding hers.
The first time I saw you was 6 months ago in town.
You were buying supplies and you smiled at something the shopkeeper’s daughter said.
It was just a moment, just a glimpse of who you are beneath the fear your father has beaten into you, but it stayed with me.
Then 3 weeks ago, I saw him strike you, and I knew I could not turn away.
He took a breath.
You ask why I care.
The truth is, I do not fully understand it myself, but I do care more than is probably wise given that we have only just begun to know each other, and I want you to know that you can trust me.
” Her heart was pounding so hard she was sure he must be able to hear it.
No one had ever spoken to her like this before with such raw honesty.
She did not know how to respond, what to say that would encompass the tangle of emotions his words stirred in her.
I do trust you, she said finally.
I came here, did I not? That took trust.
Harrison smiled and it transformed his whole face, softening the hard edges and making him look younger.
That it did.
Come on, let me show you where you will be staying.
” The room he led her to was small but clean with a real bed, a chest of drawers, and a window that looked out toward the mountains.
to Delilah, who had spent the last several years sleeping on a thin pallet in a corner of her father’s house when she was not hiding in the barn.
It seemed impossibly luxurious.
“I will leave you to settle in,” Harrison said from the doorway.
“Martha will probably want you to start work tomorrow, so you have the rest of today to rest.
Supper is served in the main house at 6, and you are welcome to join us.
” After he left, Delilah sank onto the bed and finally allowed herself to cry.
They were not tears of sadness, though there was some grief mixed in for the father she wished she had, the childhood she had never been allowed to have.
Mostly they were tears of relief and hope and the overwhelming realization that her life had just changed in ways she could not yet fully comprehend.
She had escaped.
Against all odds, she had actually escaped.
The next three weeks passed in a blur of new experiences and discoveries.
Martha Cooper proved to be everything Harrison had suggested.
A warm woman in her late 40s whose hands were indeed gnarled with arthritis, but whose spirit remained und.
She welcomed Delilah into the household with genuine kindness, teaching her the rhythms of running a ranch house and introducing her to the other members of the household staff.
The work was hard but satisfying in a way Delila’s chores at home had never been.
Here, her efforts were appreciated and acknowledged.
When she prepared a good meal, people thanked her.
When she mended clothing or cleaned a room, she received compliments.
It was such a radical departure from her father’s constant criticism that she sometimes struggled to accept the praise, convinced she must be doing something wrong.
Harrison was present in her life, but not overwhelming, seeming to sense that she needed time to adjust to her new circumstances.
He ate meals with the household, and sometimes they would talk in the evenings when the day’s work was done, but he never pushed for more than she was comfortable giving.
Their conversations ranged from the mundane details of ranch life to deeper topics like books and dreams and what they hoped for their futures.
She learned that he had come to New Mexico from Texas 5 years earlier.
following his older brother who had died in a writing accident shortly after they arrived.
He had stayed on at the Triple Bar Ranch because Samuel Cooper treated his workers fairly and because he had found a sense of purpose in the work.
He was 26 years old, had never been married, and was saving money with the vague idea that he might one day have his own small spread.
In turn, Delila shared pieces of her own story, finding it easier each time to speak honestly about her father’s treatment and her mother’s death.
Harrison listened without judgment, and gradually she began to believe what he had told her that first day, that she deserved kindness, that her worth was not tied to her usefulness or her ability to please an impossible to satisfy parent.
3 weeks and 2 days after her arrival at the ranch, Jacob Zimmerman came calling.
Delilah was in the kitchen when she heard the commotion outside, her father’s voice raised in anger as he demanded to see his daughter.
Her whole body went cold, her hands freezing in the midst of kneading dough for bread.
All the safety she had felt, all the peace she had begun to build shattered in an instant.
Martha appeared in the doorway, her expression concerned but calm.
“Your father is here,” she said quietly.
Samuel and Harrison are speaking with him now.
You do not have to see him if you do not want to, dear.
No one will force you.
But Delilah knew her father knew that he would not leave without causing a scene.
That his pride would not allow him to be denied.
I should go out there, she said, though her voice shook.
Maybe if he sees that I’m well, if I tell him myself that I will not return, he will leave.
You are braver than you know, Martha said, reaching out to squeeze her shoulder.
But if you go out there, I am coming with you, and you should know that every man on this ranch will stand between you and your father if needed.
They walked out together, and Delilah found her father in the ranchard, surrounded by Samuel, Harrison, and half a dozen of the ranch hands.
Jacob looked older than she remembered, his face hagggered and his clothes unckempt, but his eyes held the same cold fury she knew so well.
“There you are, girl,” he spat when he saw her.
“Get your things.
We are leaving.
You have caused me enough trouble with this foolish stunt.
” “I am not leaving, Papa.
” Her voice was steadier than she felt, bolstered by the solid presence of the people around her.
I am happy here.
I have work and a place to stay and I will not be coming back with you.
You do not get to make that choice.
Jacob took a step toward her and immediately Harrison moved to block his path.
Get out of my way, cowboy.
She is my daughter and she belongs to me.
She is a grown woman with the right to choose her own path, Harrison said, his voice level but hard as stone.
and she has chosen to stay here.
You need to accept that and leave.
” Jacob’s face turned an ugly shade of red.
“You did this.
You put ideas in her head, turned her against her own father.
I should have run you off my property when you first showed up sniffing around.
” “I did nothing but offer her the kindness she deserved,” Harrison replied.
“If that was enough to make her leave you, perhaps you should consider what that says about how you treated her.
” For a moment, Delila thought her father might actually attack Harrison.
His hands clenched into fists, and she saw the rage building in him, the same fury that had preceded so many of his outbursts over the years.
But Samuel stepped forward, and there was authority in his bearing that even Jacob could not ignore.
“Mr.
Zimmerman,” Samuel said coldly.
“Your daughter has made her choice clear.
She is an adult, free to live and work where she pleases, and she has chosen to remain here.
Now you can accept that and leave peacefully, or I can have my men escort you off my property.
Either way, you are leaving.
This is not over, Jacob snarled.
But he was backing toward his horse.
A daughter belongs to her father until she is married, and I will see you in front of a judge if I have to.
You cannot steal another man’s property.
She is not property, Delilah said, surprised by the strength in her own voice.
I am not property, Papa.
I am a person, and I am done letting you treat me as anything less.
Something flickered in her father’s eyes, something that might have been pain or regret, but it was quickly buried beneath anger.
He mounted his horse roughly, jerking on the reinss hard enough to make the animal toss its head.
You will regret this when you are old and alone with no one to care for you.
You will wish you had stayed where you belonged.
He rode off in a cloud of dust, and Delilah stood watching until he disappeared from view.
Her legs felt weak, her whole body trembling with the aftermath of adrenaline, but she remained upright.
She had faced her father and stood her ground, and she was still standing.
“Come on,” Martha said gently, taking her arm.
“Let us get you inside and make you some tea.
You have had enough excitement for one day.
But Delilah turned to Harrison first, meeting his eyes.
“Thank you,” she said, “for standing with me.
For not letting him take me always,” Harrison said.
And there was a promise in that single word that made her heart skip.
I meant what I said before.
“You are safe here.
He cannot hurt you anymore.
” That evening, after the work was done and supper had been cleared away, Delilah found herself sitting on the porch of the main house with Harrison beside her.
The sun was setting over the mountains, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, and the air had finally cooled enough to be comfortable.
They sat in companionable silence for a while, watching the light fade.
“Are you all right?” Harrison asked finally.
“Today was difficult.
” I am better than I expected to be.
Delilah admitted a month ago.
If my father had come for me like that, I would have gone with him without question.
I would not have believed I had any other choice.
But being here, having people treat me with respect and kindness, it has changed something in me.
I can see now that the way he treated me was not normal or acceptable.
It was wrong.
It was very wrong, Harrison agreed.
And you were incredibly brave today standing up to him like that.
I was terrified, she confessed, but I was more terrified of going back to that life than I was of facing him.
She turned to look at Harrison, studying his profile in the fading light.
Can I ask you something? Anything? Why did you really come to my father’s house that day? The truth this time, not just because you saw him hurt me.
Harrison was quiet for a long moment.
I told you I saw you in town 6 months ago.
What I did not say is that I have been looking for you in town every time I go in since then, hoping to see you again, hoping to find a way to talk to you properly.
When I heard your father in the saloon that day speaking about you with such contempt, and then saw what he did to you, I knew I could not wait any longer.
I had to do something, even if it was just checking that you were all right.
Her breath caught.
You were looking for me? Why? He turned to face her fully and in his eyes she saw something that made her pulse race.
Because from that first glimpse of you, I have not been able to get you out of my mind.
Because I wanted to know the woman behind that smile to understand what made you laugh.
Because I saw strength in you even then beneath the sadness.
And it drew me like a moth to flame.
He reached out slowly, giving her time to pull away, and took her hand in his.
I know it is too soon.
I know you have only just begun to find your footing in this new life, but I need you to know that my feelings for you are not just concern or pity.
There is more to it than that, more than I probably should admit.
Delilah looked down at their joined hands, her smaller one enveloped in his callous palm.
She should pull away, should protect her heart until she was more certain of her place in the world.
But she did not want to pull away.
What she wanted, she realized with startling clarity, was to lean into this feeling, to explore what might grow between them.
I have never been courted, she said quietly.
My father kept me too isolated for that.
I do not know the rules or how any of this is supposed to work.
There are no rules, Harrison said.
Or if there are, we can make our own.
All I ask is that you let me spend time with you.
Let me show you how special you are.
and if you decide you do not feel the same way I do, I will accept that and remain your friend.
But at least give me a chance to prove that what I feel is real.
” She met his eyes again, seeing the vulnerability in his expression.
The way he was offering her his heart with no guarantee she would treat it gently.
It was terrifying and exhilarating all at once.
“I would like that,” she said.
“I would like to see where this might lead.
But Harrison, I need you to understand something.
I am still learning who I am.
Still figuring out how to be a person rather than just a target for someone else’s anger.
I might not be very good at this.
Then we will figure it out together, he said, and he smiled.
That warm smile that made her feel safe and valued.
We have time.
There is no rush.
As the stars began to appear overhead and the night sounds of the ranch settled around them, Delilah felt something shift inside her chest.
It was hope, real and tangible, the belief that her life might actually become something worth living.
And sitting there with Harrison’s hand in hers, she allowed herself to believe in possibility.
The courting that followed was unlike anything Delila had read about in books or heard other women describe.
There were no formal dances or chaperoned outings, no carefully orchestrated meetings in parlor.
Instead, it was woven into the fabric of daily life on the ranch.
Harrison would seek her out in the evenings after work, and they would walk the property together, talking about everything and nothing.
He brought her small gifts, wild flowers he found on the range, or interesting stones from the creek, tokens that showed he was thinking of her, and slowly, carefully, they built something real between them.
Martha became something of a surrogate mother to Delilah, teaching her not just housekeeping skills, but also the art of being a woman in control of her own life.
She helped Delilah buy fabric and sew new dresses, something Delilah had not been allowed to do for herself in years.
She taught her how to manage money, how to save the wages she was earning, and she offered advice about courtship and love with a gentle wisdom that came from her own happy marriage to Samuel.
The other ranch hands accepted Delilah as part of their community, treating her with a respectful friendliness that she had never experienced before.
She learned their names and their stories, shared meals and jokes with them, and gradually came to see them as something like a family.
It was everything she had never had growing up.
This sense of belonging to something larger than herself.
As summer turned to fall and the brutal heat gave way to cooler temperatures, Delilah’s relationship with Harrison deepened.
They moved from handholding to stolen kisses in the shadows of the barn, from tentative touches to embraces that left her breathless and wanting more.
He was always careful with her, always checking that she was comfortable, never pushing her further than she wanted to go.
