The 77year-old alliance that has held the Western world together since the end of the World War II is officially facing its greatest existential threat from within.
The United States is reportedly considering pulling troops out of key European countries including Germany and Spain as tensions rise within NATO and that the center of the decision is President Donald Trump who is openly questioning the loyalty of [music] longtime allies.
Hello and welcome.
I’m Radika Dhur and you’re watching the big picture with me.
For decades, NATO has been the backbone of Western military cooperation.
Formed in 1949 after World War II, it was designed as a defensive alliance.
An attack on one member is considered an attack on all.

The United States has always been its most powerful member with tens of thousands of troops stationed across Europe.
Now countries like Germany and Spain have hosted US military bases for years.
These bases are not just symbolic.
They are critical for rapid deployment, intelligence sharing and maintaining global stability.
But now that entire structure is being questioned and according to reports, the Trump administration is exploring [music] plans to withdraw US troops from countries it sees as unhelpful during the recent Iran conflict.
The idea is to move those forces to countries that showed stronger support for US actions.
So what triggered this shift? The turning point appears to be the recent conflict involving Iran.
As we all know, during this period, several European allies expressed concern or limited support for US military operations.
Spain reportedly restricted US aircraft access to its airspace.
German officials publicly criticized the scale of strikes on Iran.
And from White House perspective, this was seen as a lack of solidarity during a critical moment.
Officials close to administration argue that NATO was tested and some allies did not meet expectations.
This has led to a deeper [music] question inside Washington.
Should the US continue to defend countries that do not fully back its military operations? Now, here’s where things get more strategic.
The plan is not about leaving NATO entirely.
In fact, US law makes it difficult for any president to fully withdraw from the alliance without Congress.
Instead, this is about reshaping the US military presence in Europe.
Countries like Poland, Romania, Lithuania, and Greece are being considered an alternative locations for US troops.
Now these nations are seen as more aligned with US security priorities and more willing to support its operations.
In simple terms, this entire situation it’s basically about rewarding cooperation and penalizing resistance.
But this move has serious consequences.
First, it risks creating divisions within NATO itself.
The alliance depends on unity.
If members start being treated differently based on political agreement, it could weaken trust.
Second, it raises concerns in Europe about long-term security.
US troops in countries like Germany have long been seen as a guarantee against external threats, particularly from Russia.
Any reduction could shift the balance of power in the region.

The third point, it could change how future conflicts are going to be handled.
European leaders argue that NATO is a defensive alliance focused on the North Atlantic region, not a tool for operations in places like the Middle East.
From their perspective, hesitation during the Iran conflict was not disloyalty.
It was adherence to the alliance’s original purpose.
Now this agreement goes to the heart of the issue.
What is NATO supposed to do in today’s world? That question came into focus during a recent meeting between Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Root.
Now, reports suggest that the discussion that was held between the two was open and frank with Trump expressing clear frustration.
While Marroot highlighted NATO’s progress on defense spending, especially efforts to push members towards higher military budgets, the underlying tensions remain still unresolved.
And there’s another layer to this particular story.
The [music] Strait of Hormos, a critical global shipping route, became a major point of contention during the Iran crisis.
The US reportedly expected stronger NATO involvement in securing it.
When that did not happen, it reinforced the perception in Washington that the alliance was not stepping up.
[music] So now the US is sending a clear message.
Future security guarantees may not be [music] automatic.
They may depend on active support.
This is a major shift from decades of policy.
And for countries in Eastern Europe, this could be an opportunity.
Posting more US troops strengthens their strategic importance and provides additional security.
But for Western European nations, it raises uncomfortable questions about their relationship with Washington.
[music] And for NATO as a whole, it creates uncertainty.
Viewers, can the alliance remain united under these conditions or is it entering a new phase where national interests take priority over collective defense? As we look ahead, several key developments will be [music] critical.
Will the Pentagon actually follow through with troops withdrawal? These decisions involve logistics, budgets, and long-term planning.
They don’t happen overnight [music] and in isolation.
So, how will European countries respond? Will they adjust their policies to align more closely with the US or push back further? And perhaps most importantly, what happens in the next global crisis? Because alliances are not tested in theory but in action.
And right now NATO is being tested in a very real way.
And the outcome of this moment could reshape not just transatlantic relations but the global balance of power for years to come.
